As with many home-science kits, patience and attention to the directions is key to achieve the best results. 

The kit comes with everything you need to get started: 3 bags of crystal growing medium along with a spoon for stirring and measuring, an instruction sheet, and seven growing containers: one large, two medium, and four small. You can teach children about crystal growth with the included fact sheet.

Each bag can produce either 1 large crystal or 2 medium crystals or 4 small crystals. Please note: there is only one large sized container, so growing three large crystals all at once will require finding additional containers. Glass jars work well, so long as you can get the crystal out once grown.

Recommended for ages 10 years and up, since this experiment requires boiling water, but we think that with adult supervision younger children will enjoy watching the process just as much.

The main ingredient of the crystal is Monoammonium Phosphate (ADP). This compound absorbs moisture.

4M crystal growing kit instructions are very simple to follow: Boil, mix, stir, wait. The directions are very specific, though, so please be sure to follow them to a T. Requiring boiling water, this process may need adults to step in and help out younger kids.

Make sure you use filtered or distilled water especially in those areas where the tap water is very hard. Additional sediment in the water can alter the growth of the crystal, and create disappointing results.

The growing solution should be left in a warm but dry place. Homes that are more humid, or too cool may have trouble getting the crystals they want. The top of the fridge works well to let the solution sit, as it is often both dry and warm. An alternative spot is a windowsill.

Crystal growth is usually noticeable only a few hours after the solution is mixed, with decent growth happening overnight. Crystals may fully grow as quickly as three or four days, but some conditions, such as cooler temperatures and high humidity, may slow the growth time to two weeks.

This is very important: Do not disturb the solution as it grows, the crystal grows because the particles settle out of the supersaturated solution. Disturbing the growing solution can easily destroy any chance of having a nice looking crystal form.

Generally, users tend to be happy with their crystalline results but some people report crystals just not growing well. This could be due to a variety of factors: misunderstanding the directions, poor water quality, not suitable temperature and humidity levels of the home or the solution was disturbed during the growth.

If you want amazing crystals as a result of your experiment then concentrate the "seed" stuff into a small pile in the center of the growing tub. This way you'll increase the probabilities of achieving that spiky, dramatic, crystal cluster that you want. Do not simply spread the stuff evenly across the little tub, because possibly you'll end up with a film of little crystals all across the bottom and sides of the container.
